fashion TREND ALERT: Grey Suiting (Part 2)
Business Meet Pleasure
by Abigail Watson
Business meets pleasure in the latest fall trend of grey suiting. This classic color and style has been attributed mainly toward menswear, but it’s now being reinvented with a feminine twist. High fashion designers, such as Jonathan Simkhai, Calvin Klein, and Alexander Wang, debuted their adaptations of this classic look at New York Fashion Week in February. By combining elegant grey-suiting with bold asymmetric necklines and short hemlines, the trend provides a great transition from office to happy hour. The standout designer who really played up the feminine edge to the traditional suit was Jonathan Simkhai. His designs exhibit juxtaposition between strength and romantic femininity through the use of tailoring mixed with bustier bodices, off the shoulder necklines, oversized sleeves, and contrasting lace.
At one point in history, successful women felt the need to wear grey power suits in order to be taken seriously in the workplace. The standard cut and style of a grey suit portrays masculine energy and deemphasizes the feminine form. Today women are no longer expected to exude masculinity at work or in their everyday life in order to be taken seriously. It’s no longer just a man’s world.
If you’re going out for drinks after your casual Friday at the office, wear a grey suit blazer with black jeans or grey pinstripe trousers and change the top from your standard blouse to a black lace camisole. On the other hand, if you want to wear this style in a dress form, pair it with your favorite leather jacket and black booties for a concert or date night. By combining the masculine vitality and the feminine vivacity there is an overwhelming sense of empowerment that exudes confidence when you walk into any room. It’s the ultimate fall trend for a girlboss!
We’re breaking out our fall/winter wardrobe staples and layering them with this timeless trend. This neutral color palette can easily be paired with items in your own closet. If you don’t own any grey suiting, your favorite contemporary retailers, such as Forever 21, Zara, and Topshop, offer several variations. Shopping at these locations will allow you to channel your inner Blair Waldorf from Gossip Girl without breaking the bank.
Throw a grey dress or jumpsuit over your turtleneck or sweater and you’ve got great way to dress up your basic clothing items! You can add more dimension and detail by adding accessories like these fall and winter cabby hats and berets. To add some juxtaposition and complement the grey and white, add accessories with a splash of bold color. Our personal favorite color to pair with grey is red! Hunt through your closet for a red handbag, some kickass shoes or even a red bandana/neck scarf. Be sure to have someone snap a picture (or twenty!) of your killer street style outfit of the day for Instagram!
