Let's Kiss Summer Goodbye!

My absolute favorite time of the year: autumn! For whatever reason, I have been eagerly waiting, at the edge of my seat, for autumn to finally grace us with its presence. Maybe it is because my daughter is finally at an age where we can partake in fun family activities, or maybe it is because Midwest fashion is taking over the industry with trends featuring classic plaids, denims, and, of course, as many layers as possible! Either way, I am thrilled to welcome autumn back in style.

The Beauty Way

In the current state of affairs, it is all too easy to wake up empty and frightened. To wake up this way is often also an experience of people experiencing mental illness. The past four years I have lived and breathed social work, learning in school about mental health and social justice. The knowledge has made me even more aware of the issues facing humanity, while creating a certain kind of rigid mind set needed to manage the academic work in order to attain a degree. I’ve also stayed up nights and woke up mornings reading one troubling news story after another.

Activity- Gym Free Fitness

Summer is here and, yet again, you haven’t quite perfected your ideal summer bod. If you’re like me, working out can be quite a challenge. It can be difficult to motivate yourself to go to the gym. Although many use that time to think, relax or meditate, I cannot muster up the drive to simply “work out.”   Plus, gym memberships can become very expensive. With all of this in mind, I did some research and came up with five different ways to get active in Minnesota this summer without needing a gym membership.

Activity: Girls Night In!

Remember back in the day when you and your high school besties would get together on a Friday night for a typical sleepover? This usually included junk food, dancing, and lip-syncing to whatever the latest hit was, watching some sappy chick flick, and spending the rest of the night gossiping about which boy is the cutest in your class. With adulthood being very time consuming and sometimes never-ending, it can be difficult to find time to relax, catch up with your friends, or even pamper yourself. This summer, I am challenging all of the ladies out there to take one evening (or night) off and host a fabulous Girls Night In event. Don’t worry, I have everything you will need to make this a night of relaxation, glamour and of course some girl-talk.

Mental Health: Exploring Self-Care

What do you think and feel when you hear the word self-care? It may appear self-care is a recent trend that only younger generations take part in. I have heard people (mostly middle-aged women) ask, “What is self-care?” and “How do I do it?” I have heard them say, “I am not good at self-care” or “It’s not realistic to take care of myself. I am a mother. I work full-time…” For some, self-care is just one more thing to do and if it’s not done, it’s one more area in their lives to feel badly about. For others, it seems too self-indulgent.

Message from Meghanlee

I would be lying if I said putting this issue together was super easy. It definitely wasn’t. Maybe it was because we had an April snowstorm that kept me stuck inside for longer than I would have liked. Or maybe it was because I procrastinated on things that I should have done a while back causing me to rush around like a chicken with its head cut off. Regardless, I am extremely happy and proud to finally send this magazine to print.
